Seascapes may not be considered "art" by the powers that be in the art world, but I think it's like playing the classics for a musician - how can you keep a pianist from playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata? It may even take a lifetime to get it right, but someone who is obsessed will never give up. The devotion that it takes humbles the spirit and transforms the ego into submission to the beauty of the planet...

This is one of the Salmon Skies seascapes that I have not added birds to yet, (and probably won't, not to this one.)

I have always painted birds, but egrets have been a special favorite. They inspire painters and photographers alike.

This one is flying over San Jose before it became the Silicon Valley. Before the streets were paved, and the orchards were planted, and the air was clogged with electrical lines. Before the hills were covered with mansions, and the rivers and streams were dammed and diverted. I imagine that the egrets were very happy then, and loved California as much as the rest of us do...

This seascape was just rocks and water until I added the pelicans, then it came suddenly to life. I call this one "East of the Sun." See more pelicans below, and on www.fine-art.com/marte8

I started painting pelicans a couple of summers ago. I have always painted birds, I now have several large finished paintings of pelicans. They seem to have a number virtues: reserved, comic and graceful, wise and unpretentious. Definitely not taken with fads or trends. Not as nervous, curious, or aggressive as gulls. They mind their own business. These are shown at Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz.

Some of them were finished for a long time before I added birds. Once I did, they came fully to life. I still develop the backgrounds before I paint the birds in the foreground. My little niece, Amber, once remarked that my studio looked like the "Pelican Palace."
